| Subject: Roleplaying Tutorial Two: What is modding? Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:49 pm | |
| This topic has recently come up more than once so I thought we could all use a nice little tutorial about it!
Now.. What is modding?
Modding is a word used when you control a character that is not yours without permission. This can take a little getting used to, especially if you are more used to writing with yourself and not having other people controlling their own characters. Let's look at an example!
Say you are roleplaying a story with two other people, and you want to hit one of them. Why? I don't know, maybe your character is a drunken buttwipe, or maybe the other character just stole your girlfriend. It's up to you. Here is how you could type that.
John Doe was so angry that he punched Jon Doh right in the jaw. Jon stumbled back in pain and John grinned, satisfied.
If another person is controlling Jon Doh, you just modded! You can not type in somebody else's reaction if they are not your character. You can not move them (unless you pick them up and they don't fight you off) and you can not make them speak to you. You can still punch them, of course, but allow them to react. Maybe instead of stumbling back, Jon would have dodged and called you a hairy pirate. We'll never know!
Modding is a sore subject for many people who tend to have short tempers about it - myself included! It can be very frustrating to have your character commanded to act in a way that you don't want them to. So if you aren't sure if you're modding, just ask!
Another version of modding is commonly referred to as 'godmodding' or a 'godmod'. This is when your character has knowledge of things that they should not. For example, if somebody says in OOC chatter something about their character and your character suddenly knows about it without being told or reasonable deducing, it's a godmod and it's severely annoying. Godmodding is also used as a term to describe somebody who suddenly has powers to counteract somebody else's every move in a fight, despite not having shown those skills before. Also annoying. Don't do it!
Okay, that's all! Feel free to ask questions! | |
